Тип записи:Публикация, Exploring EFL Teachers’ Perceptions of Media Literacy in KazakhstanDeveloping media literacy has emerged as a key requirement in our rapidly evolving world. Particularly, the incorporation of media literacy into the secondary school curriculum in Kazakhstan is perceived to have a long-term impact on the employment prospects of graduates and aligns with the country's multi-vector policy. Consequently, teachers recognize the imperative to foster media literacy in their classrooms. The integration of media literacy into the existing school curriculum holds profound importance, challenging students' critical thinking skills, creativity, and functional literacy. This study aims to explore the development of media literacy within English as a Foreign Language (hereinafter, EFL) classrooms, concentrating on teachers' perceptions and challenges related to media literacy. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research entails conducting semi-structured interviews with EFL teachers in Kazakhstan. This study is based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with fifteen EFL teachers in schools in Kazakhstan. The findings reveal that, despite certain barriers, EFL teachers acknowledge the necessity of incorporating media literacy components into their classrooms. The tension associated with teaching media literacy manifests in decisions related to selecting appropriate resources, adopting effective approaches, and navigating the attitudes of other education stakeholders. The research outcomes contribute to filling the current gap in studies within this domain, offering practical insights for teachers working in similar environments. - Некоторые метрики заблокированы вашиминастройками согласия
Тип записи:Публикация, Ethnic Narratives in Education: The Role of Kazakh Epics in Preserving Cultural Heritage and Identity(Modestum Limited, 2025-01-31) ;A.M. Toibazar ;Gulnaz Dautova ;Yerbol Aliyev ;Talgat TurdaliThe study examined the effects of teaching activities, including Kazakh Epics and mythopoetic images, on the participants’ national value achievements and attitudes towards the course in literature courses in Kazakhstan. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test, post-test, and a control group. The dependent variables were the national value achievement scale and literature course attitudes. The independent variable was the teaching activities based on Kazakh Epics and mythopoetic images in the second-year courses of the literature department of a university in Almaty. The national value achievement and attitude scales were used to collect data, which were analyzed with covariance analysis. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in students’ national value achievement scores in the experimental group exposed to Kazakh Epics and mythopoetic images. The study’s findings pave the way for recommendations for integrating culturally meaningful narratives into education. First, culturally rich content such as Kazakh Epics should be included in Kazakhstan’s literature departments’ curriculum, and policymakers and curriculum developers should prioritize the creation of teaching materials that emphasize these epics’ historical, ethical, and literary aspects. Second, the accessibility of these materials should be increased, and their compatibility with contemporary educational goals should be ensured. Third, teacher training programs should be reorganized to emphasize culturally sensitive pedagogical approaches. Though this study was localized, the research results can be applied to education systems in different geographies to develop cultural identity and values.Цитирования (OpenAlex) 7Цитирования (OpenCitations) 7 - Некоторые метрики заблокированы вашиминастройками согласия
Тип записи:Публикация, Media Literacy in Kazakhstan: Educators' Perspectives and Policy Implementation(2025-03-02); This study aims to examine media literacy in schools in Kazakhstan from the perspectives of schoolteachers and principals with a focus on diverse school settings. Conducted during the 2023-2024 academic year, the research involved three secondary schools located in rural, city, and regional levels in the southern part of Kazakhstan. The qualitative research utilised (1) focus groups with teachers, (2) interviews with principals, and (3) a research journal. Purposeful sampling included schools from regional, urban, and rural areas, with 34 participants comprising 31 English as a Foreign Language teachers (hereinafter, EFL) and 3 senior school leaders (hereinafter, SLT). The study's findings reveal disparities in media literacy education, including a lack of clear regulations and ethical guidelines concerning media literacy and media usage in classrooms, as well as the lack of resources and capacity. The results highlight the need to integrate media literacy across all grades and subjects in schools in Kazakhstan. This integration requires support through clear policies, equitable access to Information and Communication Technologies (hereinafter, ICT) tools, teacher professional development, and well-defined national policies. Such measures are essential for preparing students to navigate the media landscape effectively.Цитирования (OpenAlex) 5
