    Parental reflexivity and latent psychological violence among urban parents in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan: an exploratory study
    (Frontiers Media, 2026-09-30) ; ; ;
    Marhabbat Nurov
    Introduction Parental reflective functioning (PRF) has been associated with less harmful parenting behavior and a lower likelihood of intergenerational continuity of violence. However, little is known about whether the association between parental reflexivity and psychologically harmful parenting differs between fathers and mothers in Central Asia. This study examined parental reflexivity, measured using A. V. Karpov’s Reflexivity Scale as an operational proxy for PRF, and its association with latent psychological violence among urban parents in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Methods A cross-sectional multi-city study was conducted in Almaty, Shymkent, Turkestan, and Bishkek. The analytical sample ( N = 400), drawn from a larger dataset ( n = 500), included 158 fathers and 242 mothers. Measures included reflexivity, aggression, empathy, latent psychological violence (ILV), uyat intensity, and family-of-origin violence. Analyses comprised parent-group-specific regressions, bootstrap coefficient comparisons, hierarchical moderation models with a PRF × parent-group interaction, and robustness analyses using recruitment-site fixed effects, robust standard errors, the full sample, parent-group weighting, and additional family-context covariates. Results Reflexivity was strongly inversely associated with latent psychological violence in both parent groups. The PRF–ILV slope was descriptively steeper among fathers than mothers ( b = −0.900, R 2 = 0.485 vs. b = −0.779, R 2 = 0.417), but the difference was not statistically significant ( z = −1.27, p = 0.204; 95% bootstrap CI [−0.320, 0.067]). The PRF × parent-group interaction was also nonsignificant (Δ R 2 = 0.002, p = 0.201). Among highly reflective parents with family-of-origin violence, none of five fathers met the exploratory high-ILV threshold (ILV ≥ 70), compared with 1 of 7 mothers; this difference was nonsignificant ( p = 1.000). Family-of-origin violence was associated with lower reflexivity among both fathers ( d = 0.64) and mothers ( d = 0.74). Discussion Parental reflexivity showed a robust inverse association with latent psychological violence, but formal analyses provided no evidence that this association differed between fathers and mothers. The descriptively steeper father association should therefore be regarded as hypothesis-generating rather than as evidence of a father-specific effect. These findings support further longitudinal and intervention research in urban Central Asian populations.

    This article discusses the formation of teachers who are proficient in the techniques and means of individual and professional training of new generation specialists in the field of special education, as well as the direction of students for volunteer work. Experience in scientific research within professional education demonstrates that fostering personal qualities is considered one of the key objectives of higher education institutions. Typically, the educational process emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge and the formation of subject-specific competencies. Therefore, in the context of the modernization of higher professional education, the importance of ensuring the personal and professional growth of future specialists in social work is significantly increasing. It should be noted that the development of a complex of qualities such as empathy, tolerance, reflexivity in their further professional activities is not the purpose of educational practice, and, consequently, the education of a future special pedagogical specialist and the improvement of his practical professional activity. The relevance of the research is explained, first of all, by the globalization of social processes, socio-economic and educational dynamics, and the logic of social development characterized by phenomena in various spheres of society. It initiates the strategic directions of the new paradigm of modern professional education of the society and the state. From the point of view of importance for students, volunteering not only helps to solve many social problems of society, but also contributes to the development of socially significant qualities of future specialists, the development of their active lifestyle and professionalism. Volunteering provides an opportunity to get to know different groups of the population, as a rule, interesting and active people. Given the nature of volunteering in society, you can fill out a list of individual assignments for students.

    In today's educational environment, increasing attention is being paid to studying the factors that influence students' psychological well-being. One such factor is emotional intelligence (EI), which, according to several studies, can have both a protective and indirect effect on anxiety. The aim of this study was to comprehensively analyze the emotional intelligence characteristics of university students and their relationship with their tendency toward unmotivated anxiety. The study examined key components of EI, including emotional awareness, emotional regulation, self-motivation, empathy, and emotional regulation of others. The methodological basis of the study included the use of methods for assessing emotional intelligence and diagnosing the level of unmotivated anxiety, as well as the use of methods of descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multiple linear regression. The study results showed that most students exhibited average levels of emotional intelligence and moderate levels of unmotivated anxiety. The most prominent components of EI were emotional awareness and self-motivation, while emotion regulation was demonstrated at a lower level. Correlation and regression analyses revealed no statistically significant relationships between EI scores and anxiety levels, indicating the limited predictive power of these constructs. The value of this study lies in its clarification of the role of emotional intelligence in the structure of students' psychological characteristics, as well as in raising the question of the need to seek additional resources – coping strategies, social support, and stress resilience. The practical significance of the study lies in the potential use of the obtained data for the development of psychological support programs for students. Keywords: emotional intelligence, anxiety, unmotivated anxiety, students, self-regulation.

    Психологиялық қауіпсіздік және эмпатия: «Зар заман» поэзиясын оқытуда ЖИ – медиациясының рөлі
    (Kazakh National Pedagogical University, 2026-09-27) ;
    This study examines the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) mediation on students’ psychological safety, empathic engagement, and understanding of historical and literary texts in the context of teaching Zar Zaman poetry. The theoretical framework integrates the multidimensional model of empathy, the concepts of psychological safety and self-efficacy, and the sociocultural approach to development. The study involved 60 eighth-grade students from two schools in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Using a quasi-experimental design, the participants were assigned to a control group (n=30) and an experimental group (n=30). During the four-week intervention, the control group studied Zar Zaman poetry using traditional instructional methods, whereas the experimental group received traditional instruction supplemented by individual dialogues with generative AI and culturally and historically contextualized prompt engineering. Psychological changes were assessed using the Perspective-Taking and Fantasy subscales of an adapted version of Davis’s Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), a scale measuring anxiety during interaction with AI, and semi-structured interviews. The results indicated a 23% increase in perspective-taking and a 21% increase in fantasy identification in the experimental group, compared with increases of 6% and 5%, respectively, in the control group. Anxiety associated with AI interaction decreased by 42% in the experimental group. Rubric-based assessment of text-analysis skills showed a 21% improvement in the experimental group compared with 6% in the control group. Qualitative analysis revealed tendencies toward greater freedom in expressing personal opinions and emotional reactions during AI-mediated dialogue, increased engagement with the perspective of historical subjects, and stronger connections between the literary text and students’ personal experiences. The findings suggest that AI mediation may provide an additional reflective space that can reduce evaluation-related anxiety and support empathic engagement with historically and culturally situated literary texts. However, given the limited sample size and the characteristics of the psychodiagnostic instruments employed, causal interpretations should be made with caution, and the identified relationships require further examination in larger samples.
