Abstract. One of the major factors limiting the productivity and quality of cereal crops is damage caused by pests, particularly aphids (Aphididae). In the south-eastern region of Kazakhstan, wheat yield losses due to harmful organisms range from 15% to 25%, highlighting the urgent need for effective pest management strategies. This study aims to investigate the species composition, biological characteristics, population dynamics, and harmfulness of cereal aphids, as well as to evaluate approaches for their control. The results demonstrate that aphids pose a significant threat to cereal crops due to their high reproductive capacity, migratory ability, and rapid adaptation to environmental conditions. Their harmful effects are manifested in three main ways: direct damage through sap feeding and growth inhibition, reduction of photosynthetic activity due to the development of saprophytic fungi on honeydew, and transmission of viral plant diseases. The highest levels of infestation are observed during the grain filling and milk ripening stages, which may result in yield losses of up to 70-90%. Furthermore, agricultural intensification and the widespread use of pesticides contribute to the increased resistance and harmfulness of aphid populations, disrupting ecological balance and promoting pest outbreaks. The study emphasizes that the use of resistant plant genotypes, combined with phytosanitary monitoring and environmentally safe protection methods, represents the most effective and sustainable approach to controlling cereal aphids. The findings of this research contribute to improving integrated pest management strategies and enhancing the productivity and quality of cereal crops under the ecological conditions of Kazakhstan.
