Tourist flow has a positive impact on the economy, culture, environment and communities of countries and regions, making it a valuable asset and contributing to the development of historical sites, cultural heritage and traditions, attracting visitors interested in learning about local customs. Tourist flow stimulates investment in infrastructure such as transport, accommodation and tourist facilities, and improves the quality of life of local residents and visiting tourists. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the current state and prospects for the development of tourist flow in the city of Almaty. The study was based on the statistical data of Almaty city for the last 10 years (2014-2023) and answers to the questions of the questionnaire for entrepreneurs. Statistical data were received from the National Statistical Bureau of the Republic of Kazakhstan and analyses were carried out from 19.01.2024 to 25.02.2024. Also in the study, we conducted a survey aimed at identifying the main problems of entrepreneurs in increasing tourist flow and selected the responses of 211 entrepreneurs (respondents). According to the results of the study, the number of foreign tourists arriving in Kazakhstan in 2014 was 679.0 thousand tourists, and in 2023 this figure increased to 1084.8 thousand tourists. Compared to 2022, the number of foreign tourists increased by 16.9%. The number of foreign tourists arriving in Almaty in 2023 was 261571 and domestic tourists were 710586. Thanks to inbound tourists, the share of tourism in the gross domestic product (GDP) of Almaty reached 11.3%. To increase the tourist flow to Almaty, it is first of all important to make the infrastructure more convenient and attractive for tourists. Thus, to attract more tourists from different regions and countries, it is necessary to invest in marketing and advertising campaigns and offer tours for active holidays such as cultural events, culinary festivals, hiking and skiing. This study identifying the current status and prospects of tourist flow in Almaty city aims to improve the quality of tourism services, income, employment, and tourist flow and contribute to the literature.

The paper focuses on how tourism contributes to the formation of economic development and geopolitical relationships between the states of Central Asia, specifically, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Despite the historical, cultural and geographical connections that are strong in this region, particularly through the story of the Silk Road, tourism remains an unbalanced part of the regional agenda of development and integration. The research aims at observing how various actors view the economic and geopolitical potential tourism holds and to what level tourism helps in regional cooperation and state positioning. The study relies on the qualitative and comparative research methodology. Data was collected by use of 120 semi-structured interviews with the representatives of the common sector, academia and the tourism industry in major urban and cross-border destination. The analysis of data was conducted in NVivo 14 software with the application of the thematic and comparative and matrix codes. According to the findings, tourism, in the majority of case s, is viewed as a tool of local economic growth and enhancing the resiliency of local communities, and its geopolitical and integrative capabilities are under-explored. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are unique because they have a more advanced institutional support level, infrastructural preparedness, and strategic orientation as it allows tourism to be a source of s oft power and regional presence. Conversely, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are administratively weak and their institutions have a low capacity of collaboration across borders. The paper will add to the literature on tourism and regional development by highlighting the importance of regional structures and mechanisms of joint governance to ensure the validation of tourism as an aspect of long-term stability and collaboration in Central Asia, particularly in contexts where shared narratives such as the Silk Road remain insufficiently translated into concrete policy.

The petroglyphs of Central Asia represent a distinctive form of symbolic and visual heritage that is gaining relevance in scholarly debates on cultural tourism, regional identity, and sustainable development. Although their archaeological importance has long been recognized, their integration into contemporary tourism planning remains conceptually fragmented and underexplored. This study provides a systematic and meta-analytic synthesis of scientific literature concerning petroglyphs in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Through bibliometric analysis, it identifies dominant research themes, leading institutions, and international collaboration networks. The results confirm increasing interest in the educational, symbolic, and experiential tourism dimensions of petroglyphs. However, the review also highlights thematic and geographical imbalances, particularly the underrepresentation of certain regions and a scarcity of robust empirical studies. The meta-analytic component shows a moderate positive effect of petroglyph-based heritage on cultural tourism development. Kazakhstan emerges as the leading academic node in this domain. The study does not attempt to establish causality but seeks to clarify how petroglyphs have been conceptualized in scientific discourse over the past two decades. Bibliometric mapping shows strong correlations between publication volume and heritage-centered national strategies. Research also indicates that digital tools, such as 3D modeling and GIS, are increasingly employed to preserve and interpret petroglyph sites. Despite these innovations, community-based approaches remain limited, signaling the need for greater local engagement. By linking rock art research with tourism studies, digital humanities, and heritage policy, this article outlines potential directions for more inclusive, interdisciplinary, and empirically grounded future research. Ultimately, the findings support the notion that petroglyphs are not only remnants of the past, but dynamic resources for interpreting identity, enhancing tourism sustainability, and fostering cultural continuity within the evolving framework of regional development in Central Asia. These insights may guide policymakers, researchers, and cultural institutions in shaping integrative strategies. Further efforts should aim to connect heritage preservation with inclusive tourism, education, and long-term regional resilience. Strengthening regional cooperation and cross-border heritage initiatives may also amplify the role of petroglyphs in sustainable cultural development.
