This study investigates the electrochemical performance of activated carbon (AC) derived from two biomass sources, rice husk (RH) and walnut shell (WS), utilizing two activation methods: chemical activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and physical activation with carbon dioxide (CO2). The aim is to evaluate the potential of these bio-derived carbon materials in energy storage applications, particularly for supercapacitors. The electrochemical behavior of the activated carbon electrodes was assessed using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) techniques, along with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), to evaluate the specific capacitance, energy density, charge transfer resistance, and ion diffusion properties.

This work introduces an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective strategy for synthesizing graphene nanomaterials from agricultural residues—walnut shells and apricot stones. The synthesis pathway combines desilication, controlled pre-carbonization, chemical activation with KOH, and mild exfoliation to produce few-layer graphene with a high degree of structural order. The process, conducted at 523–573 K for pre-carbonization and 1123 K for activation, enables the formation of graphene sheets with a specific surface area of approximately 1300 m2/g, carbon content of 80–90%, and average pore diameter below 100 nm. The materials were comprehensively characterized using SEM, TEM, Raman spectroscopy, and BET analysis. Raman spectra revealed an IG/I2D ratio of ~1.5–2 a.u., confirming the presence of 4–5 graphene layers. Compared to conventional biomass-derived graphene routes, the developed approach ensures enhanced porosity, higher graphitic ordering, and improved purity, demonstrating its strong potential for energy storage, adsorptive purification, and environmentally benign nanotechnology applications.

This study presents the development of an environmentally benign and economically viable methodology for the synthesis of graphene-containing carbon materials derived from renewable agricultural residues, specifically walnut shells, rice husks, and apricot stones. The proposed synthesis route involves sequential stages of controlled pre-carbonization, desilicification, chemical activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH), and subsequent mild exfoliation, resulting in the formation of few-layer graphene with a high degree of structural ordering. Pre-carbonization carried out at 523–573 K, followed by activation at 1123 K, yields graphene sheets exhibiting a specific surface area of 1300–1800 m2/g, a carbon content of 60–90%, and an average pore diameter below 100 nm. The synthesized materials were subjected to comprehensive physicochemical characterization using BET surface area analysis, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic absorption flame emission spectrophotometry. Raman spectroscopic analysis revealed an I_G/I_2D intensity ratio of approximately 1.5–2.0, indicating the presence of graphene structures consisting of approximately four to five layers. To enhance adsorption performance, the graphene-containing carbon materials were further functionalized with sulfuric acid, and the successful incorporation of surface functional groups was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The adsorption properties of the functionalized graphene-containing carbon materials were evaluated in aqueous solutions containing sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium salts, demonstrating adsorption efficiencies of up to 80%. Compared to conventional biomass-derived graphene synthesis methods, the developed approach produces materials with enhanced porosity, higher graphitic ordering, and improved chemical purity. These characteristics highlight the strong potential of the synthesized graphene-containing carbon materials for applications in energy storage systems, adsorption-based water purification technologies, and environmentally sustainable nanotechnological applications.

For the first time, an approach to the production of highly efficient porous carbon sorption materials based on lignocellulose agricultural waste has been developed and a comprehensive assessment of their physico-chemical properties has been carried out. Rice husks (RH), walnut shells (WSh), wheat straw (WSt) and pine sawdust (PS) were used as raw materials. The resulting carbonysates were chemically activated with potassium hydroxide at different mass ratios of the activating agent and the carbon matrix. To increase the surface chemical activity of sorbents, potassium hydroxide was used. The morphology of the surface and the elemental composition of the synthesized materials were studied using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersion analysis, and the functional groups were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It has been established that an increase in the degree of activation leads to the development of a hierarchical porous structure with the formation of micro-, meso- and macropores, as well as to an increase in the content of oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups on the surface of carbon materials. The greatest microporosity was achieved with a KOH:carbon mass ratio of 1:4. The formed functional structure helps to increase the sorption capacity of materials in relation to toxic pollutants of various nature. The results obtained confirm the prospects of using synthesized carbon sorbents as environmentally safe and economically feasible materials for cleaning air and water environments.

The growing demand for efficient and sustainable materials for air purification has stimulated interest in activated carbons derived from renewable biomass resources. In this study, activated carbons were prepared from rice husk, wheat straw, sawdust, and walnut shells and systematically investigated as sorbents for toxic gases and volatile organic compounds. The materials were characterized using nitrogen and water vapour sorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis to evaluate their textural properties, morphology, thermal stability, and surface chemistry. The results showed that the precursor type strongly influences the pore structure and functional group composition of the activated carbons. Wheat straw and Rice husk–derived activated carbons exhibited the highest total pore volume and a well-developed porous structure, together with a high content of oxygen- and silicon-containing elements. Gas breakthrough experiments with different probes showed that wheat straw–derived activated carbon excels in VOC removal due to its highly microporous structure. In contrast, rice husk–derived activated carbon displays strong affinity toward inorganic gases such as NH₃ and, after urea modification, achieves enhanced performance for SO₂. These results underscore the versatility and practical applicability of carbon materials obtained from plant residues.
