PROCESSING OF RICE WASTES INTO ACTIVATED CARBON(2018-01-01) ;S. R. Bainazarova ;A. T. Shuragaziyeva ;Anipa Tapalova ;L. A. ZhusupovaNurbol Orynbasaruly AppazovA method for processing of rice wastes (husk, straw) into activated carbon was proposed. The thermolysis of raw material and the activation of carbonizate were carried out at 500oС and 800oС temperatures respectively. The properties of obtained activated carbon are determined by standard methods. The porous structure of obtained carbon have been studied under scanned electronic microscope. According to the results of experimental studies, activated charcoal obtained from rice husks corresponds to the WAC brand, activated charcoal obtained from rice straw corresponds to BAU-A grade. The research will allow rational use of agricultural waste in order to obtain useful secondary adsorbent products intended for adsorption and liquid media. A Short Review on the N,N-Dimethylacrylamide-Based Hydrogels(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, 2021-11-26) ;Ayatzhan Akhmetzhan; ; ; Scientists have been encouraged to find different methods for removing harmful heavy metal ions and dyes from bodies of water. The adsorption technique offers promising outcomes for heavy metal ion removal and is simple to run on a large scale, making it appropriate for practical applications. Many adsorbent hydrogels have been developed and reported, comprising N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA)-based hydrogels, which have attracted a lot of interest due to their reusability, simplicity of synthesis, and processing. DMAA hydrogels are also a suitable choice for self-healing materials and materials with good mechanical properties. This review work discusses the recent studies of DMAA-based hydrogels such as hydrogels for dye removal and the removal of hazardous heavy metal ions from water. Furthermore, there are also references about their conduct for self-healing materials and for enhancing mechanical properties.
Eucalyptus wood waste biochar: a green solution for fluoranthene contamination in wastewater(Taylor & Francis, 2025-04-03) ;Yu Shuang Ren ;Bekzat Tynybekov ;Akmaral Nurmahanova ;Talgat IbragimovUssen KurmanbayThis study investigates the removal of fluoranthene (Flu) from vehicle-wash wastewater (VWW) using biochar (EWB) derived from eucalyptus wood waste. Analytical techniques such as surface area analysis (SAA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to characterize the EWB. Optimal conditions for Flu adsorption (98.80%) were determined as 40 ppm initial concentration, 60 minutes contact time, pH 5, 60°C, and 0.4 g adsorbent dosage. The adsorption process was evaluated using kinetic models and isotherms, showing that Flu adsorption onto EWB follows a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The Langmuir isotherm provided the best fit for the experimental data. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous, as indicated by the values of entropy (ΔS°), Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), and enthalpy (ΔH°). A comparative analysis with commercial adsorbents demonstrated the high efficacy of EWB in removing Flu from industrial wastewater, achieving over 98% efficiency.
Zeolites and Activated Carbons in Hydroponics: A Systematic Review of Mechanisms, Performance Metrics, Techno-Economic Analysis and Life-Cycle Assessment(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, 2025-12-08) ;Dana Akhmetzhanova; ;Yerlan Doszhanov; Karina SaurykovaThe sustainable operation of hydroponic systems depends on maintaining the chemical stability of circulating nutrient solutions and preventing the accumulation of toxic compounds. The accumulation of phytotoxic ammonium, heavy metals, and organic metabolites in recirculating nutrient solutions remains one of the key challenges limiting the efficiency, sustainability, and scalability of hydroponic cultivation. This review provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of zeolites, activated carbons (ACs), and their functionalized and composite forms as key sorbents for nutrient management, contaminant removal, and environmental safety in hydroponic cultivation. Natural zeolites, with their well-defined crystalline structure and high ion-exchange selectivity toward ammonium and heavy metal cations, enable effective NH4+/K+ balance regulation and phytotoxicity mitigation. ACs, characterized by high specific surface area and tunable surface chemistry, complement zeolites by offering extensive adsorption capacity for organic compounds, root exudates, and pesticide residues, thereby extending the operational lifespan of nutrient solutions and improving overall system performance. Further advancements include the integration of zeolites and ACs with two-dimensional (graphene, g-C3N4) and three-dimensional (MOF, COF) frameworks, yielding multifunctional materials that combine adsorption, ion exchange, photocatalysis, and nutrient regulation. Transition-metal modification, particularly with Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, and Co, introduces redox-active centers that enhance sorption, catalysis, and phosphate stabilization. The comparative synthesis reveals that the combined application of zeolite- and carbon-based composites offers a synergistic strategy for developing adaptive and low-waste hydroponic systems. From a techno-economic and environmental standpoint, the judicious application of these materials paves the way for more resilient, efficient, and circular hydroponic systems, reducing fertilizer and water consumption, lowering contaminant discharge, and enhancing food security. This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Relevant studies were identified through Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria.
О. D. ChenchikThe article investigates the adsorption of diclofenac (pure API and as part of the Voltaren preparation) on porous carbon materials obtained from rice husks by chemical activation methods (H3PO4, K2CO3, KOH), as well as on synthetic carbon from xerogel. A comparative assessment of the sorption capacity and the kinetics of the process was carried out under static and dynamic conditions. It was found that the KOH-activated sample (SBET = 2610 m2/g) has the highest microporosity and demonstrates the maximum adsorption capacity (up to 956 mg/g in static and up to 1016 mg/g in a column with a fixed layer). Kinetic data is well described by a pseudo second-order model (R2 > 0.99), and dynamic adsorption is described by the Thomas model (R2 = 0.998). This allows us to predict the efficiency of sorbents in flow systems. There was no significant effect of the auxiliary components of the dosage form on the sorption process. The established patterns indicate the predominant interaction of the diclofenac molecule with the microporous carbon matrix through π–π interactions and electrostatic effects. The results obtained confirm the prospects of alkaline-activated carbon materials based on biomass for the development of effective enterosorbents for intoxication with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
