Тип записи:Публикация, Climate-Induced Transboundary Water Insecurity in Central Asia: Institutional Challenges, Adaptation Responses, and Future Research Directions(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, 2025-06-15) ;Yerlan Issakov ;Kaster Sarkytkan ;Tamara Gajić ;Aktlek AkhmetovaГ. Е. БердыгуловаThis study conducts a comprehensive and systematic literature review, guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol, to investigate the impacts of climate change on closed lake systems in Central Asia, with a specific focus on Lakes Balkhash, Issyk-Kul, and Urmia. Based on a detailed analysis of 74 peer-reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2025, this review identifies key thematic patterns and bibliometric trends in the literature. Findings reveal that most studies emphasize hydrological stress, glacier retreat, and an increasing drought frequency, while institutional adaptation and transboundary governance mechanisms remain underdeveloped and inconsistently implemented. National-level adaptation strategies vary considerably, with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan showing a relatively higher engagement, though rarely supported by enforceable cross-border agreements. This review also highlights the limited participation of local research institutions and insufficient empirical validation of policy measures. The bibliometric analysis indicates that most high-impact publications originate outside the region, particularly from China and Germany. This study provides a structured synthesis of existing knowledge and identifies critical avenues for future research and policy development. It calls for more inclusive, transdisciplinary, and regionally embedded approaches to water governance in the context of accelerating climate risks.Цитирования (OpenAlex) 6 - Некоторые метрики заблокированы вашиминастройками согласия
Тип записи:Публикация, UNDERSTANDING THE CONTRIBUTION OF TURKIC PETROGLYPHS TO CULTURAL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN CENTRAL ASIA: A SYSTEMATIC AND META-ANALYTIC PERSPECTIVE(Editura Universitatii din Oradea, 2025-10-06) ;Yerlan Issakov; ;Zhulduz Nizamatdinova ;Shakhislam Uzakbaevich LaiskhanovDuman Toktaruli ALIASKAROVThe petroglyphs of Central Asia represent a distinctive form of symbolic and visual heritage that is gaining relevance in scholarly debates on cultural tourism, regional identity, and sustainable development. Although their archaeological importance has long been recognized, their integration into contemporary tourism planning remains conceptually fragmented and underexplored. This study provides a systematic and meta-analytic synthesis of scientific literature concerning petroglyphs in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Through bibliometric analysis, it identifies dominant research themes, leading institutions, and international collaboration networks. The results confirm increasing interest in the educational, symbolic, and experiential tourism dimensions of petroglyphs. However, the review also highlights thematic and geographical imbalances, particularly the underrepresentation of certain regions and a scarcity of robust empirical studies. The meta-analytic component shows a moderate positive effect of petroglyph-based heritage on cultural tourism development. Kazakhstan emerges as the leading academic node in this domain. The study does not attempt to establish causality but seeks to clarify how petroglyphs have been conceptualized in scientific discourse over the past two decades. Bibliometric mapping shows strong correlations between publication volume and heritage-centered national strategies. Research also indicates that digital tools, such as 3D modeling and GIS, are increasingly employed to preserve and interpret petroglyph sites. Despite these innovations, community-based approaches remain limited, signaling the need for greater local engagement. By linking rock art research with tourism studies, digital humanities, and heritage policy, this article outlines potential directions for more inclusive, interdisciplinary, and empirically grounded future research. Ultimately, the findings support the notion that petroglyphs are not only remnants of the past, but dynamic resources for interpreting identity, enhancing tourism sustainability, and fostering cultural continuity within the evolving framework of regional development in Central Asia. These insights may guide policymakers, researchers, and cultural institutions in shaping integrative strategies. Further efforts should aim to connect heritage preservation with inclusive tourism, education, and long-term regional resilience. Strengthening regional cooperation and cross-border heritage initiatives may also amplify the role of petroglyphs in sustainable cultural development.Цитирования (OpenCitations) 1 - Некоторые метрики заблокированы вашиминастройками согласия
Тип записи:Публикация, STUDY OF TURKIC TOPONYMS OF CENTRAL ASIA AND KAZAKHSTAN ON MEDIEVAL HISTORICAL MAPS(Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, 2026-06-20) ;Yerlan Issakov ;Zhulduz NizamatdinovaThe historical maps of Central Asia and Kazakhstan's territory serve as a vital source for examining the region's political, ethnographic, and cultural development dynamics. Beginning in the early 20th century, mapping studies have primarily concentrated on the northern and central regions of Eurasia, as well as on Central Asia, where nomadic peoples and city-states reside. Nevertheless, a thorough examination of Turkic place names on historical maps, and the investigation of their origins, development, and geographical spread, remains an urgent concern. The purpose of the study was to examine Turkic place names in Central Asia and Kazakhstan as depicted on historical maps. As research methods, cartographic analysis, historical-geographical comparative study, and correlation of hydronymic and oronymic data with historical sources were utilized. The study also examined the historical significance and usage of place names by analysing changes in political, ethnic and administrative features on maps. As a result of the study, 11 historical maps were analysed, from which many Turkic place names were identified on the maps below: ‘ASIA noviter delineata’, ‘La Grande Tartarie’, ‘Imperium Timuri Begi vel Tamerlanis’, “Tartariae Sive Magni Chami Regni tÿpus’ and ‘Nieuwe Caart van de Caspische Zee, met alle desselfs Riviere, Eylanden en Dieptens’. Especially, maps most commonly display such vital Turkic place names as ‘Turkestan’, ‘Desht-Kipchak’, ‘Syrdarya’, ‘Amudarya’, ‘Samarkand’, ‘Bukhara’, ‘Balashagun’, ‘Kazakh Steppe’ and further entries. Furthermore, we have ensured that the maps clearly show watercourses, mountain ranges, rivers and trade routes, as well as the locations of towns and fortifications. Therefore, the medieval maps selected for this study constitute valuable material for the study of Turkic place-names in Central Asia and Kazakhstan, and their use is of great significance in contemporary cartographic, ethnographic and historical research, as well as in the field of education. Consequently, an analysis of the evolution of geographical names serves to demonstrate the historical continuity and geographical influence of Turkic civilisation. - Некоторые метрики заблокированы вашиминастройками согласия
Тип записи:Публикация, ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF TOURISM ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECONOMIC AND GEOPOLITICAL RELATIONS OF THE COUNTRIES OF CENTRAL ASIA(Editura Universitatii din Oradea, 2026-06-30) ;Kaster Sarkytkan ;Yerlan Issakov ;Aktlek AKHMETOVA; Г. Е. БердыгуловаThe paper focuses on how tourism contributes to the formation of economic development and geopolitical relationships between the states of Central Asia, specifically, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Despite the historical, cultural and geographical connections that are strong in this region, particularly through the story of the Silk Road, tourism remains an unbalanced part of the regional agenda of development and integration. The research aims at observing how various actors view the economic and geopolitical potential tourism holds and to what level tourism helps in regional cooperation and state positioning. The study relies on the qualitative and comparative research methodology. Data was collected by use of 120 semi-structured interviews with the representatives of the common sector, academia and the tourism industry in major urban and cross-border destination. The analysis of data was conducted in NVivo 14 software with the application of the thematic and comparative and matrix codes. According to the findings, tourism, in the majority of case s, is viewed as a tool of local economic growth and enhancing the resiliency of local communities, and its geopolitical and integrative capabilities are under-explored. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are unique because they have a more advanced institutional support level, infrastructural preparedness, and strategic orientation as it allows tourism to be a source of s oft power and regional presence. Conversely, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are administratively weak and their institutions have a low capacity of collaboration across borders. The paper will add to the literature on tourism and regional development by highlighting the importance of regional structures and mechanisms of joint governance to ensure the validation of tourism as an aspect of long-term stability and collaboration in Central Asia, particularly in contexts where shared narratives such as the Silk Road remain insufficiently translated into concrete policy. - Некоторые метрики заблокированы вашиминастройками согласия
Тип записи:Публикация, A systematic review of the effectiveness of teaching geoecological issues to geography students using digital technologies(Frontiers Media, 2026-09-09); ;Sagyngali Kalkashev; ;Nurbol UssenovAssan ZHELDIBAYEVThe introduction of innovative pedagogical approaches to teaching geoenvironmental issues is considered one of the key directions of contemporary educational practice. Although digital technologies and active learning strategies are widely used, their effectiveness in the context of teaching geography students has not been systematically studied. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines: 64 relevant articles were selected, and from these, the most fully documented studies were taken for in-depth analysis. The novelty of the study lies in its comprehensive consideration of pedagogical approaches to digital technologies in geoenvironmental education, linking them to the requirements for the training of geography students. The results show that geospatial tools and immersive technologies are widely used, but that the outcomes are often limited to short-term affective indicators, indicates a lack of rigorous designs that isolate the technology's independent contribution, and that teacher preparation and institutional support remain a persistent barrier. The study proposes a conceptual model that integrates digital technologies, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary integration, and includes concrete recommendations for teachers and policymakers. - Некоторые метрики заблокированы вашиминастройками согласия
Тип записи:Публикация, Developing interdisciplinary and meta-subject competencies in school geography: a systematic review of digital and mobile learning approaches(Frontiers Media, 2026-09-30) ;A. M. Sarsebayeva ;N. (Nurbol) Usenov ;Bakhadurkhan Sh. Abdimanapov ;Mukhamedrakhim KursabayevThe integration of digital and mobile learning approaches into school geography has become an important direction of pedagogical innovation in recent years, however, how these approaches systematically develop interdisciplinary and meta-subject competencies remains insufficiently theorized and empirically developed. Although individual studies have demonstrated the pedagogical potential of geospatial technologies, mobile augmented reality, immersive virtual environments, and artificial intelligence-based platforms, no previous review has conducted a comprehensive, systematic analysis of this body of evidence, linking it to the cross-curricular and meta-subject competency frameworks that are central to the reform agenda for national and international curricula. The proposed study fills this gap through a systematic review conducted according to PRISMA 2020 requirements: Ninety-one peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2025 were included, selected from the Scopus database, and the level of agreement among the experts was confirmed with a κ = 0.79. The results of the analysis showed that GIS-based research, mobile augmented reality, and AI-supported learning tools make a measurable contribution to competencies such as spatial thinking, metacognitive regulation, systemic reasoning, and critical argumentation. These competencies are central both in international geography curricula and in post-Soviet interdisciplinary concepts. However, a persistent “policy–competency gap” was identified: curricular ambitions for high-level interdisciplinary teaching are often undermined by structural constraints, an insufficient pedagogical scaffolding, and the lack of validated assessment tools. Theoretical frameworks for digital competence development, such as Falloon's Teacher Digital Competency model and Chiu and colleagues’ needs-supporting institutional model, are not sufficiently applied in the context of geography. Based on this synthesis, a conceptual model is proposed that systematizes the conditions for the targeted integration of digital and mobile learning approaches in school geography with the aim of developing interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary competencies, along with priority directions for future empirical research and curriculum design.
