Temperature has a strong influence on the mechanical behavior of road pavement layer materials and subgrade soil which requires reliable information on temperature changes in them.At different characteristic periods of a year temperature can be one of main factors in a destruction of structural elements of highways. This paper analyzes the results of monitoring of temperature and moisture in layers of a pavement structure and its subgrade on the section (58 km + 895 m) of the "Almaty-Bishkek" highway. The monitoring was carried out using a special measuring system. In particular, based on the measured temperature values, characteristics of cyclic freeze-thaw (number, durations and minimum temperatures) in the first asphalt concrete layer of the pavement are established: the number of FTCs is 83; most FTCs have a duration of no more than 20 hours (80.72%) and a minimum temperature of no lower than -6°C (more than 80%); there are correlations between duration and minimum temperature for short (less than 25 hours) and (more than 25 hours) long durations.Correct accounting of the characteristics of FTCs will increase the strength and durability of road pavements.

The purpose of this paper is to experimentally establish quantitative indicators, relationships and dependencies on the depth of characteristics (amount, duration and minimum temperature) of freeze-thaw cycles of a road in the climatic conditions the Almaty city located in the south-eastern region of Kazakhstan. Monitoring of temperature in the road was carried out using a special measuring system. It was found that the largest amount of FTCs, equal to 76, occurs on the pavement surface and decreases with depth (up to 6 at a depth of 28 cm); the absolute value of the lowest minimum temperature of FTCs also decreases with depth: -17.9 °C on the pavement surface and –0.3 °C at a depth of 69 cm. The depth of 21.5 cm is designated as the boundary, above which the FTCs characteristics are determined by daily temperature fluctuations and below which they are determined by seasonal and annual temperature fluctuations; at the boundary depth the maximum, minimum and average durations of FTCs have the greatest values (1039.5, 3.3 and 521.4, respectively). In the region under consideration and in others with similar climatic conditions, when assessing the strength and durability of asphalt concretes taking into account cyclic freezing and thawing, it is recommended to assign the amount and minimum temperature of FTCs according to the results obtained in the paper; the duration of FTCs is taken to be equal to 20 h; it is recommended to conduct laboratory tests on asphalt concrete samples when they are fully saturated with water.

In this paper an experimental study and comparative analysis of temperature and moisture in pavements and their soil bases on experimental road sections located in two southern metropolises of Kazakhstan—in the cities of Almaty and Shymkent—were conducted. The temperature and moisture values were measured by systems for long-term continuous monitoring of temperature and moisture in structural elements of roads. Sensors were installed at ten locations within the pavements and soil bases at depths ranging from 2.5 cm to 270–275 cm below the pavement surfaces. The temperature and moisture monitoring period extends from 21 October 2024 to 31 December 2025. Temperature and moisture readings were recorded hourly. It has been established that the temperature conditions of pavements and their soil bases in the two cities are qualitatively the same, and the quantitative differences are small: air temperatures and soil temperatures at depths of 2.5 cm and 10 cm in Shymkent are higher than in Almaty by an average of 4.75 °C, 5.69 °C and 2.12 °C, respectively. These facts make it possible to use a single methodological approach to account for temperature changes in the design of new roads and in the operation of existing roads. It is recommended to pay attention to ensuring the resistance to rutting and fatigue cracking of asphalt concrete layers of pavement. The moisture regime at the experimental section in Almaty up to 130–140 cm depth is unstable due to seepage of precipitation and surface water through the stone mastic and the two coarse-grained porous asphalt concrete layers of the pavement; in Shymkent the pavement and the soil base have a stable moisture regime throughout the year; these features should be taken into account when calculating accumulations of plastic strains (increasing of rut depth) and fatigue damage in asphalt concrete layers of pavements while also accounting for temperature changes in them and transport facility loads in different time periods.
