    COMPETENCE-BASED APPROACH IN THE FORMATION OF INTERCULTURAL-COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING
    The main aim of learning a foreign language is the development of students foreign language communicative competence which will allow them to integrate as much as possible into the international professional community. This is an important condition for the social adaptation of students to modern life. In the context of the transition from a knowledge-based approach to teaching to a competency-based approach, a change in value orientations, the teacher needs new methods and technologies that allow the teacher to identify the student’s knowledge, update it, add what is missing, structure the training material, and teach not only to remember and reproduce, but put them into practice. Methods that organize learning through desire, stimulate students' learning and natural curiosity, motivate interest in the independent acquisition of knowledge. The article deals with the role and importance of applying a new "competence-based approach" in the formation and developing students’ intercultural and communicative competence in teaching foreign language. The authors give explanations to such concepts as "competence" and "competency", as well as "competence approach".

    LINGUODIDACTIC TESTS IN TEACHING A SECOND LANGUAGE
    (2020-07-15)
    F.Т. SAMETOVА
    ;
    ;
    The article deals with linguodidactic tests, the main purpose of which when teaching languages is to determine the formation of linguistic communicative competence. The authors consider linguodidactic testing as an area of language teaching methods, and on the other hand, tests are classified as pedagogical (subject, didactic) testing as part of a general testology, which also includes psychological, professional and other tests. The choice of the form of test tasks depends on the goals of testing and objects of control. The objects of control when teaching a second language are foreign-language speech activities: speaking, listening, reading, writing - and its components - speech skills, skills, knowledge. The main objects of control are speech skills, since only they testify to the ability to participate in communication. At the same time, an important role in mastering the second language is played by language skills (pronunciation, lexical, grammatical), on the formation of which speech activity is based. Thus, language skills are also subject to control. They may be subject to ongoing monitoring. In this case, the progress of the learning process is monitored. Language skills included in the communicative context may be the subject of final control. In this case, the learning outcome is monitored.

    FORMING SOCIOCULAR AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCY IN WORKING WITH FICTIONAL TEXT IN METACULTURAL READING TRAINING (on the example of translations of V. HUGO's "les Misérables" into russian and kazakh languages)
    (2025-06-25) ; ;
    Светлана Давидовна Погорелова
    The ability to analyze literary texts through the integration of linguistic, cultural, and communicative knowledge is a vital aspect of modern literature teaching methodology. This article explores effective methods and techniques for teaching metacultural reading - the skill of identifying, understanding, and interpreting culturally significant elements within a literary work - using the example of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables in its Russian «Отверженные» and Kazakh «Аласталғандар» translations. This topic is especially relevant in the context of pedagogical universities, where future teachers of Russian language and literature are expected not only to conduct textual analysis independently but also to guide their students in developing similar interpretive abilities. Therefore, enhancing the teaching of reading and literary analysis is essential for cultivating students’ intercultural competence within the framework of the “Russian Language and Literature” academic program. The article puts forward the hypothesis that the Russian and Kazakh versions of «Les Misérables» may act as metacultural codes, representing points of intersection between different cultural systems. It outlines methodological strategies for the analysis of culturally meaningful lexicon, presents approaches to ideological and artistic interpretation of excerpts rich in cultural content, and provides specific examples of cultural analysis employing sociological and linguo-cultural frameworks. In addition, the article identifies the teacher’s role in facilitating discussion and supporting students’ argumentative speech during the interpretation of selected passages. The study contributes to comparative literary research and offers theoretical insights relevant to philology, linguoculturology, and the broader field of language culture. Its practical significance is evident in the development of elective courses and methodological guidelines in the fields of world literature, literature pedagogy, and comparative linguistics. The proposed techniques aim to strengthen students’ analytical skills and foster meaningful intercultural dialogue through the study of literature.

    The study aimed to examine the effectiveness of motivational, cognitive, and reflexive components in developing communicative competence among pre-service teachers within the context of multilingual education. A total of 162 participants took part in the study, including 82 students in the experimental group and 80 in the control group. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design was employed. The experimental group received instruction through a specially designed elective course focused on developing communicative competence in multilingual settings, while the control group followed the standard curriculum. Data were collected using questionnaires and performance-based communicative tasks involving dialogue, monologue, public speaking, and written interaction. Statistical analysis included descriptive measures and t-tests to assess differences between groups. The results showed that students in the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement in motivational, cognitive, and reflexive components, as well as in overall communicative competence, compared to the control group. Correlation analysis revealed strong relationships among these components, with the reflexive factor exerting the greatest influence. The findings indicate that integrating motivational, cognitive, and reflexive dimensions into teacher education effectively enhances pre-service teachers’ communicative competence in multilingual educational environments.

    Introduction Culturally responsive language education seeks to connect English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction with learners' cultural identities and local knowledge. However, classroom-based quantitative research on the integration of indigenous folklore into primary EFL education remains limited, particularly in Central Asia. This study examined changes in fourth-grade learners' linguistic, speech, and sociocultural competence following the integration of Kazakh indigenous folklore into primary EFL instruction. Methods A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test-post-test design was employed with 100 fourth-grade students aged 9–10 years at a public primary school in Kazakhstan. The 12-week intervention comprised two 45-minute lessons per week and was delivered by the regular classroom teacher. Adapted Kazakh folk narratives, cultural traditions, traditional games, storytelling, role-play, retelling, discussion, and productive language tasks were incorporated into English lessons. Learners' communicative competence was assessed using parallel pre- and post-test forms of a 25-item lexical-grammatical test, three composite speech performance tasks, and a 25-item sociocultural competence test. Paired-samples t-tests were used to examine within-group changes, and Cohen's dz and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results Post-test scores were significantly higher than pre-test scores across all three competence domains (all p < .001). Linguistic competence increased from M = 12.84 (SD = 4.63) to M = 17.92 (SD = 4.41), with a mean gain of 5.08 points and a large effect size (dz = 0.84). Speech competence increased from M = 16.27 (SD = 5.18) to M = 22.68 (SD = 4.95), with a mean gain of 6.41 points and a large effect size (dz = 0.98). Sociocultural competence increased from M = 11.96 (SD = 4.88) to M = 18.74 (SD = 4.37), producing the largest mean gain (6.78 points) and effect size (dz = 1.10). All 95% confidence intervals for the mean differences excluded zero. Discussion The findings indicate substantial within-group development in linguistic, speech, and sociocultural competence during the folklore-based instructional period, with the strongest improvement occurring in the sociocultural domain. These results suggest that culturally familiar materials may help learners connect English language use with their existing cultural knowledge and experiences. However, because the study involved a non-randomized one-group design without a control group and was conducted in a single school with one teacher, the observed improvements cannot be attributed exclusively to the intervention. The study contributes classroom-based quantitative evidence from an underrepresented Central Asian context and highlights the potential value of culturally meaningful resources in multilingual primary EFL education.
