    Parental reflexivity and latent psychological violence among urban parents in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan: an exploratory study
    (Frontiers Media, 2026-09-30) ; ; ;
    Marhabbat Nurov
    Introduction Parental reflective functioning (PRF) has been associated with less harmful parenting behavior and a lower likelihood of intergenerational continuity of violence. However, little is known about whether the association between parental reflexivity and psychologically harmful parenting differs between fathers and mothers in Central Asia. This study examined parental reflexivity, measured using A. V. Karpov’s Reflexivity Scale as an operational proxy for PRF, and its association with latent psychological violence among urban parents in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Methods A cross-sectional multi-city study was conducted in Almaty, Shymkent, Turkestan, and Bishkek. The analytical sample ( N = 400), drawn from a larger dataset ( n = 500), included 158 fathers and 242 mothers. Measures included reflexivity, aggression, empathy, latent psychological violence (ILV), uyat intensity, and family-of-origin violence. Analyses comprised parent-group-specific regressions, bootstrap coefficient comparisons, hierarchical moderation models with a PRF × parent-group interaction, and robustness analyses using recruitment-site fixed effects, robust standard errors, the full sample, parent-group weighting, and additional family-context covariates. Results Reflexivity was strongly inversely associated with latent psychological violence in both parent groups. The PRF–ILV slope was descriptively steeper among fathers than mothers ( b = −0.900, R 2 = 0.485 vs. b = −0.779, R 2 = 0.417), but the difference was not statistically significant ( z = −1.27, p = 0.204; 95% bootstrap CI [−0.320, 0.067]). The PRF × parent-group interaction was also nonsignificant (Δ R 2 = 0.002, p = 0.201). Among highly reflective parents with family-of-origin violence, none of five fathers met the exploratory high-ILV threshold (ILV ≥ 70), compared with 1 of 7 mothers; this difference was nonsignificant ( p = 1.000). Family-of-origin violence was associated with lower reflexivity among both fathers ( d = 0.64) and mothers ( d = 0.74). Discussion Parental reflexivity showed a robust inverse association with latent psychological violence, but formal analyses provided no evidence that this association differed between fathers and mothers. The descriptively steeper father association should therefore be regarded as hypothesis-generating rather than as evidence of a father-specific effect. These findings support further longitudinal and intervention research in urban Central Asian populations.

    In the modern world, handicraft tourism is one of the developing types of tourism. The authors of this paper note that handicraft tourism is becoming more and more popular every year. Among other things the increasing number of tourists to the Kyrgyz Republic is associated with the manifestation of interest in the crafts and trades of the Kyrgyz. Handicraft tourism plays an important role as a tool for the preservation and development of the people’s cultural heritage, contributes to the solution of population employment issues, stimulates an increase in the educational and cultural level of the population, blurs the boundaries between people. The article reveals the developmental characteristics of handicraft skills of the Kyrgyz as a part of traditional culture. The properties of wool, the technology of making felt, the combination of color shades, the placement of patterns on the felt, as well as their change in modern conditions are described. It is concluded that felt carpets, which have absorbed aesthetic and practical functions, have always been distinguished by their environmental friendliness and naturalness. The authors are convinced that these valuable qualities of handicraft products provide an opportunity for the development of handicraft tourism, in the future, as one of the priority areas of the Kyrgyzstan economy. Over time, the craft culture of the republic can become a permanent and demanded product offered for consumption and use by tourists.

    The purpose of this work is to show the role of mythologized history in the management of modern political processes in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The article analyses the causes of appearance of mythologized histories in the two republics of Central Asia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The article evaluates the function and instrumental character of this phenomenon. Authors have demonstrated in a lot of examples that mythologized history is one of the tools by which an attempt is made to control the political process. Mythologized history plays an important role in both countries. It cannot be argued that this phenomenon is understood and interpreted in full. In any case, this phenomenon requires further study.

    Орталық Азия мектептері мен университеттерінің әйел-оқытушыларының психологиялық күйзелісі: Covid-19 пандемиясы жағдайында онлайн оқытуға көшудің салдары
    (Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, 2022-07-08) ;
    This article presents results of a sociological study of the problems of psychological health of female teachers in Cen- tral Asia during remote work in the context of COVID-19. The study was conducted by the Research Institute for Social and Gender Studies at the Kazakh National Women’s Teacher Training University, with support of the United Nations Educational, scientific and cultural organization. The aim of the empirical study is to assess the level of stress that women- teachers, in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, experienced in the pre-pandemic and post-pandemic periods, as well as the stress factors that may arise as a result of organization of work and workload. The practical and scientific significance of the study lies in the fact that it will help assess the stress in the lives of women teachers in Central Asia, and use the results and rec- ommendations of the study to prevent stress-related problems. According to the study, 53% of female teachers indicated that they have experienced stress due to their workload and family problems in the pre-pandemic period, and this figure increased to 65% after the pandemic. The results of the study can be used by researchers in the humanities who study stress that affects the psychological health of female teachers during the pandemic and emergency situations. Key words: teachers from Central Asia, COVID-19 and teachers, psychological stress, female teachers, gender equality, pandemic, distance learning.

    The petroglyphs of Central Asia represent a distinctive form of symbolic and visual heritage that is gaining relevance in scholarly debates on cultural tourism, regional identity, and sustainable development. Although their archaeological importance has long been recognized, their integration into contemporary tourism planning remains conceptually fragmented and underexplored. This study provides a systematic and meta-analytic synthesis of scientific literature concerning petroglyphs in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Through bibliometric analysis, it identifies dominant research themes, leading institutions, and international collaboration networks. The results confirm increasing interest in the educational, symbolic, and experiential tourism dimensions of petroglyphs. However, the review also highlights thematic and geographical imbalances, particularly the underrepresentation of certain regions and a scarcity of robust empirical studies. The meta-analytic component shows a moderate positive effect of petroglyph-based heritage on cultural tourism development. Kazakhstan emerges as the leading academic node in this domain. The study does not attempt to establish causality but seeks to clarify how petroglyphs have been conceptualized in scientific discourse over the past two decades. Bibliometric mapping shows strong correlations between publication volume and heritage-centered national strategies. Research also indicates that digital tools, such as 3D modeling and GIS, are increasingly employed to preserve and interpret petroglyph sites. Despite these innovations, community-based approaches remain limited, signaling the need for greater local engagement. By linking rock art research with tourism studies, digital humanities, and heritage policy, this article outlines potential directions for more inclusive, interdisciplinary, and empirically grounded future research. Ultimately, the findings support the notion that petroglyphs are not only remnants of the past, but dynamic resources for interpreting identity, enhancing tourism sustainability, and fostering cultural continuity within the evolving framework of regional development in Central Asia. These insights may guide policymakers, researchers, and cultural institutions in shaping integrative strategies. Further efforts should aim to connect heritage preservation with inclusive tourism, education, and long-term regional resilience. Strengthening regional cooperation and cross-border heritage initiatives may also amplify the role of petroglyphs in sustainable cultural development.

    Language and Religion as Sign Systems
    (2026-06-26) ;
    Nurlan Kairbekov
    This study analyzes the interaction between language and religion as interconnected sign systems that influence national culture. It aims to identify the mechanisms through which religious and linguistic symbols shape collective values and cultural identity. The methodology combines semiotic, linguistic, and religious studies, along with a comparative analysis of regional cases. Results show that in Kyrgyzstan, China, India, Iran, and Kazakhstan, religious vocabulary is integrated into national languages, forming hybrid expressions and enhancing the symbolic meaning of everyday speech. The analysis of religious texts and rituals in Arabic, Sanskrit, Chinese, Persian, and Turkic reveals common semantic fields related to sacred concepts like purification, sacrifice, enlightenment, and mercy. In Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, Islamic and Tengri codes coexist, while in Iran, Shiite and Zoroastrian symbolism overlaps, and in China, Buddhist and Confucian practices interact. The study also highlights how ritual practices adapt under the influence of modern media and global transformations. For example, in China, hieroglyphic signs strengthen links between national culture and religious identity, while in India, the preservation of sacred terms demonstrates the resilience of the Vedic tradition. This study broadens the understanding of how language and religion interact in different cultural contexts.

    ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF TOURISM ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECONOMIC AND GEOPOLITICAL RELATIONS OF THE COUNTRIES OF CENTRAL ASIA

    The paper focuses on how tourism contributes to the formation of economic development and geopolitical relationships between the states of Central Asia, specifically, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Despite the historical, cultural and geographical connections that are strong in this region, particularly through the story of the Silk Road, tourism remains an unbalanced part of the regional agenda of development and integration. The research aims at observing how various actors view the economic and geopolitical potential tourism holds and to what level tourism helps in regional cooperation and state positioning. The study relies on the qualitative and comparative research methodology. Data was collected by use of 120 semi-structured interviews with the representatives of the common sector, academia and the tourism industry in major urban and cross-border destination. The analysis of data was conducted in NVivo 14 software with the application of the thematic and comparative and matrix codes. According to the findings, tourism, in the majority of case s, is viewed as a tool of local economic growth and enhancing the resiliency of local communities, and its geopolitical and integrative capabilities are under-explored. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are unique because they have a more advanced institutional support level, infrastructural preparedness, and strategic orientation as it allows tourism to be a source of s oft power and regional presence. Conversely, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are administratively weak and their institutions have a low capacity of collaboration across borders. The paper will add to the literature on tourism and regional development by highlighting the importance of regional structures and mechanisms of joint governance to ensure the validation of tourism as an aspect of long-term stability and collaboration in Central Asia, particularly in contexts where shared narratives such as the Silk Road remain insufficiently translated into concrete policy.
