    Modern interactive methodological techniques for working with fiction text (based on the analysis of the ethical dilemma of “good and evil” in the work “Les Misérables” by Victor Hugo)
    (2025-12-22) ; ;
    F.Z. Mamedova
    The development of fiction text analysis skills contributes to the formation of communicative, reading, and interpretive competences, which help students grasp the deeper ideas of literary works and enhance their communicative abilities. This article presents modern interactive teaching methods suitable for university instructors of literary disciplines. The issue of developing students’ interpretive skills is particularly relevant in the training of future teachers of Russian language and literature. Such professionals must not only master techniques of literary analysis and interpretation but also be methodologically prepared to teach these skills. There is an objective need to modernize approaches to teaching reading and the literary heritage, particularly that of Victor Hugo, within university curricula. The research results demonstrate that students develop critical thinking and teamwork skills while analyzing philosophical dilemmas such as the conflict between good and evil in literary texts. This article highlights effective methodological techniques and outlines their advantages based on a review of both domestic and international scholarship. It proposes methodological models for analyzing culturally rich passages and defines didactic tasks aimed at encouraging polemical discourse and active student engagement in class. Furthermore, the article identifies ways to enhance teachers’ methodological competence by updating and enriching their instructional toolkit. The findings confirm that these techniques foster interpretive and communicative skills, help students comprehend complex moral ideas and deep philosophical meanings, and promote the development of argumentative discourse. The theoretical conclusions drawn from this study can enrich the methodology of teaching literature, philology, and language culture. The practical significance lies in the development of elective courses and methodological recommen dations on foreign literature and teaching methods. The results can be applied in communicatively oriented literature teaching and in the creation of educational resources. By integrating these interactive methodological techniques into educational practice, the goal of updating and expanding the methodological toolkit of literature teachers is effectively achieved.

    The study aimed to examine the effectiveness of motivational, cognitive, and reflexive components in developing communicative competence among pre-service teachers within the context of multilingual education. A total of 162 participants took part in the study, including 82 students in the experimental group and 80 in the control group. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design was employed. The experimental group received instruction through a specially designed elective course focused on developing communicative competence in multilingual settings, while the control group followed the standard curriculum. Data were collected using questionnaires and performance-based communicative tasks involving dialogue, monologue, public speaking, and written interaction. Statistical analysis included descriptive measures and t-tests to assess differences between groups. The results showed that students in the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement in motivational, cognitive, and reflexive components, as well as in overall communicative competence, compared to the control group. Correlation analysis revealed strong relationships among these components, with the reflexive factor exerting the greatest influence. The findings indicate that integrating motivational, cognitive, and reflexive dimensions into teacher education effectively enhances pre-service teachers’ communicative competence in multilingual educational environments.

    Introduction Culturally responsive language education seeks to connect English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction with learners' cultural identities and local knowledge. However, classroom-based quantitative research on the integration of indigenous folklore into primary EFL education remains limited, particularly in Central Asia. This study examined changes in fourth-grade learners' linguistic, speech, and sociocultural competence following the integration of Kazakh indigenous folklore into primary EFL instruction. Methods A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test-post-test design was employed with 100 fourth-grade students aged 9–10 years at a public primary school in Kazakhstan. The 12-week intervention comprised two 45-minute lessons per week and was delivered by the regular classroom teacher. Adapted Kazakh folk narratives, cultural traditions, traditional games, storytelling, role-play, retelling, discussion, and productive language tasks were incorporated into English lessons. Learners' communicative competence was assessed using parallel pre- and post-test forms of a 25-item lexical-grammatical test, three composite speech performance tasks, and a 25-item sociocultural competence test. Paired-samples t-tests were used to examine within-group changes, and Cohen's dz and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results Post-test scores were significantly higher than pre-test scores across all three competence domains (all p < .001). Linguistic competence increased from M = 12.84 (SD = 4.63) to M = 17.92 (SD = 4.41), with a mean gain of 5.08 points and a large effect size (dz = 0.84). Speech competence increased from M = 16.27 (SD = 5.18) to M = 22.68 (SD = 4.95), with a mean gain of 6.41 points and a large effect size (dz = 0.98). Sociocultural competence increased from M = 11.96 (SD = 4.88) to M = 18.74 (SD = 4.37), producing the largest mean gain (6.78 points) and effect size (dz = 1.10). All 95% confidence intervals for the mean differences excluded zero. Discussion The findings indicate substantial within-group development in linguistic, speech, and sociocultural competence during the folklore-based instructional period, with the strongest improvement occurring in the sociocultural domain. These results suggest that culturally familiar materials may help learners connect English language use with their existing cultural knowledge and experiences. However, because the study involved a non-randomized one-group design without a control group and was conducted in a single school with one teacher, the observed improvements cannot be attributed exclusively to the intervention. The study contributes classroom-based quantitative evidence from an underrepresented Central Asian context and highlights the potential value of culturally meaningful resources in multilingual primary EFL education.

    Developing communicative and intercultural competence through integrating art in language teaching

    The article explores the development of communicative and intercultural communicative competencies in language education with the help of the integration of artistic practices. In the context of the sociocultural theory of language education, the development of communicative competence is an operational language construct, while the development of intercultural communicative competence is a meta-construct that regulates language use. The integration of art is understood not as a supplementary teaching tool, but as a pedagogical mediator that transforms learning processes through experiential engagement, symbolic interpretation, emotional involvement, and reflective dialogue. The article is based on a mixed-methods approach that incorporates a quasi-experiment, control group, and experimental group of students. The results of the study suggest that there is a correlation between the art-based instruction and an increase in communicative activity, intercultural competence, and students’ own reflective capacity. However, the results are seen as indicative rather than causal. The results of the study support the pedagogical value of instruction that is oriented towards art as a means of creating a culturally rich and dialogic learning environment. However, the results also highlight the need for future research into how different art forms influence the development of competence.
